Plumbing Help in Cedar Mill
Cedar Mill takes its name from a sawmill built on Cedar Mill Creek in the 1850s and run by the Jones family until 1891. The mill pond sat near what is now 119th Avenue and Cornell Road. When postmaster J.Q.A. Young opened a post office in 1874, he named it Cedar Mill, and the name stuck as the farms gave way to homes.
Today Cedar Mill is an unincorporated community north of Highway 26, spread along Cornell and Barnes roads. Homes range from mid-century houses on established streets to subdivisions and townhomes from the last few decades, so the plumbing problems we see vary as much as the houses do.
One neighborhood, many generations of plumbing
In older parts of Cedar Mill, the calls look a lot like those in other mid-century neighborhoods: aging sewer laterals with roots, crawlspace supply lines exposed to cold and water heaters connected to decades-old valves. In newer subdivisions the pipes are modern, but two-story layouts with upstairs laundry rooms mean a failed hose can soak a ceiling below within minutes.
Many homes here sit on sloped ground near the creeks that run through the area. Lower levels and crawlspaces on the downhill side are where groundwater collects in winter, and where a sump pump or a blocked drain causes trouble first.
Water, sewer and gas in Cedar Mill
Most of Cedar Mill is served by Tualatin Valley Water District, which took over the area's former Wolf Creek water district. Water in that part of the system has been fluoridated since local voters approved it in 1964. As everywhere, the district maintains the meter and main, and the line into your home is yours.
Sewer service comes through Clean Water Services, which maintains the public mains under the street, and natural gas through NW Natural. For any gas smell, leave first and call NW Natural or 911 from outside, then call us for the repair once the area is safe.
