Plumbing Help in Aloha

Aloha is an unincorporated community just west of Beaverton, covered by the 97003 and 97078 ZIP codes and governed by Washington County rather than a city. It was named in 1912, and locals pronounce it a-LOW-wa rather than like the Hawaiian greeting. The Tualatin Valley Highway runs through the heart of it between roughly 170th and 219th avenues, past the old Reedville area.

Suburban building took off here from the 1950s onward, so Aloha has homes from almost every decade since. That long building history is the key to the plumbing problems we see: a 1960s ranch house and a 2010s townhome on the next block can need completely different repairs for the same symptom.

Aloha homes and the problems they bring

Houses from the 1950s through the 1970s are the most likely to have galvanized steel supply lines, older cast iron or clay sewer pipe and gas connectors that have been in place for decades. Those materials work for a long time, then fail all at once. Low pressure, rusty water, a sewer line full of roots or a gas connector that has been bent behind a range one too many times are all common calls.

Many of these homes sit on crawlspaces, which leaves supply lines exposed underneath the floor. When a hard freeze settles over the west side for a few days, those lines are among the first to split. A burst pipe in a crawlspace can run for hours before anyone notices, so knowing where your main shutoff is pays off.

Water, sewer and gas service in Aloha

Most of Aloha is served by Tualatin Valley Water District, which supplies the unincorporated communities around Beaverton. The district is preparing to bring Willamette River water to its customers through the new Willamette Water Supply System. As with any provider, the district maintains the meter and street side, and the line into your house is yours.

Sewer service comes through Clean Water Services, and natural gas through NW Natural. Because older homes here are more likely to have original gas connectors, we check those when we work on a water heater or range line.
